Default Cooling problem??

Well summer time is here again and the old cooling issue is on.. or not.. this is my question..I notice that the needle on the temperature gage on my 66 289 sometimes will go up to the high mark and get back to the normal again during street driving or freeway driving, I replace the 160 thermostat installed by the PO with a high flow 180 and new coolant (the radiator is a new 3 row) I check the coolant tempreature with a radiator temperature gauge and let the car idle for 1/2 hour, the temperature was steady at 180..since the problem persisted I figure that it was an electrical problem..may by the temperature sensor..change it but same thing, the gage needle shows normal and after a while goes to hot and come back again to normal..even do I am sure the coolant temperature is normal make me very uneasy when driving and specially waiting on the trafic ligths..Help!! waht else can I chek/fix to ger ready of this problem?? thank you to

Also it is any adventage between the 3 row and a 4 row "high efficiency core" advertise on Mustang PLus????
Thank You

I had the same problem with my 65 289. I put a pusher fan and it helped a little but I wasn't satisfied. I put a aluminum radiator on and the sure helped out alot.

Glen...thanx for the link to radiator info and overheating. Very informative and a must read for all of us during this hot summertime heat.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that gague. My truck has done that ever since I've been driving it, for about 5 years now, and its a six cylinder with a V8 radiator, and its never overheated. Just a gauge quirk. Now my mustang needle never moves, and up till recently had an original radiator that was I believe, out of a six cylinder.
