1966 Coupe?
I only paid $3800 for mine from down in Texas. Rust free car with a few year old paint job and a very nice running V8 with a few mods.
Wait until you find the right one! I made the mistake of buying my first stang when I was 15 ($1900) and not wanting to wait anymore. HUGE MISTAKE, that damn thing was soooo rusted out. I spent 2 years on bodywork and finally decided that it wasnt worth it to put more money into it. It woulda been $5k+ just for finishing some bodywork and a paint job compared to $3800 for a rust free car with a semi-descent paint job and running engine.
Check ebay, local classifieds and all those other classic car websites, there are thousands of classic mustangs for sale out there. Im with 6mustang6 on waiting, trust all of us!

Didn't pick up on where your located. The price you pay for a rust free will depend on where you are located. You pay more in the rust belt, and less here in the desert because most cars out here are rust free and it's not a real big sales feature. Since I'm an Inline 6 fan, I would say that if you're wanting to do a swap to a V8 you will be wasting time, money and effort and will still have a vin code that says your a six. In addition, to get the best overall performance, you will also need to change out the whole suspension, costly and time consuming. If you really want an 8, bide your time and buy one with, and vin coded for an 8. You'l be much happier in the short and long run. I still would not give more the 4k for the car.
Got your PM and responded. I've had my I6 for over 16 years now and I don't regreat getting and keeping it. I have ended up with a car that at most Mustang car shows is rather unique.
Hey my personnal opinion has gotten me into trouble on a couple of my projects, but i would have to say that waiting for a v-8 is worth it. I don't mind doing work, actually I chose one with more work just to have the car actually be mine. My opinion is that in order to make a car yours you have to put in the time under the hood, and in the end you'll be much happier.
