Default Couple problems, please help if you can.

Hey guys, it's been a little while since I was last here, and have since encountered a couple problems.
I'll start with the most serious.

1. sometimes the car won't start, not even crank. I'll go out to start it, i'll turn the key and nothing will happen. I'll pop the hood to see if I see anything, i'll close the hood come back and sometimes the car will fire right up. I'm afraid to drive it anywhere for fear that it won't start if I park it somewhere.

2. It idles too high, However when I turn the idle down to a satisfying amount it dies when I shift into drive. this happened a while ago, and I took it to a mechanic who took out some vacuum hose form the carburator (I think) and plugged where it went in. He said my car didn't need it. After that it worked fine for a bit, would fire right up without giving it gas, but its now back to its original state.

3. My gas gauge reads empty at all times. it used to be faulty, I replaced the sending unit and it "worked" for a few days, now just reads empty all the time.

sorry if this is an overwhelming amount of problems, but any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

Sorry to bump this thread, but I have all today to work on the car so I wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions. I was also wondering how to determine which speedometer gear I need so that it will read correctly.

Thanks again.

You need to adjust the dash pot or the solenoid throttle positioner to prevent the car from dying when placed into drive. (assuming you have an automatic). This part is on the linkage side of the carb. Its purpose is to prevent the car from stalling when you decelerate. The solenoid or dashpot activates a plunger that forces the throttle linkage into a position that keeps the idle rpms up. (about 200 rpm higher then curb idle).

I have no idea about the failure to turn over problem.

As far as the gas gauge, I would suspect that the wire that connects to the sending unit outside of the fuel tank has come loose. Either that or the associated ground has come loose, or needs a clean spot to make contact. The other possibility is that when you installed the sending unit you either put it in the wrong position or you managed to damage the float and it has worked its way free.

#1 - When you close the hood, you are vibrating the chassis where your connections are and creating a ground contact. Take off the negative post from the battery at both the battery and the engine and clean them well.
#2 - already answered
#3- If you have a new sending unit, and a new wirng harness to the tank, your gauge is toast. If you don't have a new wiring harness to the tank, which is a part of the tail light harness, then get a multi-meter and take some readings. Crawl under the rear and take off the sending unit wire and ground it to the chassis. Your gauge should peg if the wire is good. If not, then you either have a break in the wire, or your gauge is toast.

if soaring's idea doesn't work on #1, you might have a dead cell in the battery. sometimes it will crank, sometimes it won't. more likely a bad connection though.

Check your connection on the starter. Sometimes it will get a little loose also.
