Default tilt away steering column switch

HELP!! I have a problem with the actuator switch for the tilt away steering wheel. It is a simple switch that opens the valve and lets vacuum go from one side to the other when the drivers door is opened. It is bolted to the upper side of the column and has one wire and two vacuum hoses attached to it. Is there ANY other switch that can be used from a newer model of car which will do the same job? I hope you guys have an answer.

yeah, any kind of airtight soiliniod type device should work. I know what your talking about, My 67 vert has tilt-away steering. I think you can buy new ones...... i've seen them somewhere. The problem on my 67 is the rod, and everything in the column is tight, and the vacuum diaphram isn't strong enough to pull the rod down.[:@]

When you open the drivers door the steering wheel moves to the right! It was also called the fat mans wheel! I had three Cougars and every one had that option in it!

yeah. I had always wondered what that stuff was on my 67. It had the two switches on the door jamb, and i was looking under the column and saw all the vacuum stuff, and starter disable switch. Then i realized what it was, and worked to fix it. It works half way. You have to jingle the wheel to get it to move.

couldn't you, technically speaking, hook up a string, a pully and a return spring to do the same thing?
