Transmission
Take it to a car wash with the hand wand. Spray it liberally with degreaser and let that sit on it for awhile, then hit it with the soap and power spray. That ought to at least take off the first layer.
Other than the bellhousing it looks EXACTLY like a C-4 I blew up not too long ago. Vacuum modulator is in the right place, so is the second gear servo.
There are variations of the C-4, depending on the year, some have a provision in the case for a dipstick, and on earlier models the dipstick tube bolts into the pan.

cruise o matic is listed as an FMX is my service manual. So where are you getting this from some Ford publication?
C4 and C3 are in the same section with minor differences in outward appearance. Lo and behold a C5 looks very simliar to a C4 as well, but it has a lock up and some other stuff, so it has its own service section..
A4LD is an overdrive and it has stupid little plastic hockey pucks in the valvebody. Its the light duty OD automatic, with the AOD being the medium duty for a while..
The last C3 I did was in a broncoII and guess what, it got replaced by a C4 using the same bellhousing.. That means it was at one point a C4 but could have been swapped for a C3 somewhere in its past.. and we dont want to be using a C3 now do we? not enough clutches in them.
So Hutch, do ya work in a shop or something? Any chance you are using a chiltons repair book? I hope not, they are junk, I have found plenty of them with incorrect torque specs..
Not tryin to start a fight with ya or anything.. but if you wanna see scans or pics of the listings in my service manual I will post them.
Just for the sake of being correct, there should be a TAG on the lower bolt of the servo cover.. So if you post up what the tags first line on top left says I will gladly look it up and tell you what the tag came from..
Tell ya waht. I will just post a scan of the entire tag id chart and you guys can look it up sometime..

The tag is still there, clean it off and post up what it says.. then it can be looked up and identified. Can even tell you waht year it came from (in most instances) and what engine was infront of it.. Motor Manuals rock.

I own a repair shop. Managed Cottman Transmission for three years. Building trans for Ford for 13 years. My infos come from past experince. I am a Ford Senior Master Tech, ASE Master and have been building trans since I was a kid. And I build full race C-4 units. The cruiseamatic was used in the 64 1/2 - 69. There was changes made to the vavle body for 67. 64 1/2-66 had a green dot in what we know as second gear. If you put it drive it would start in 2nd and shift once. 67 saw a change for drive was drive and shifted twice. They had an O-ring on the pump, vent above the reverse servo, Had FOMOCO cast into the case, had 24 spline input shaft, completely different valve body from a C-4. Yes they did call an FMX a cruiseamatic also but it did not come out untill later years. Mostly put behind 351C in Mustangs and many other cars. A C-3 and C-4 are nothing alike. The C-3 is the forerunner to the A4LD which is used in Explorers, Rangers, Aerostars, 4 cyl Mustangs, BroncoII's. They totally sucked, That is why they did not last long. I am not using a service manual for this info, This is coming from experince. I am a subscriber to Alldata for my shop.
