Well sounds like your best bet now, especially being that you had them test the stuff is a trip to radio shack and get a fairly decent multi meter all you need is one with volts and one with amps, ohms are nice too. Your looking at about 20$ for the low end but it should suffice 50$ will get you a nice one I have the digital one from radio shack cat number 22-811
Its awesome i use it for all my computer testing stuff and car stuff, easy to use and precise/accurate as well.

yeah its pretty easy
for volts set it to dc and test across + to + - to -
current you test through by removing one lead from the battery and hooking the meter between the disconnected lead and the post while set to dc amp

But Kstang is almost dead on I bet You may have to take it somewhere to have them sort out the wiring did you tag the wires before you removed them so you know where they went?

they may have switched the pattern on you
basically the red one goes to + black to - and stator white to S

but thats just a guess im not sure what type of alt you have did you get a diagram with it?

Oh yeah does you new alt have the same back plate shape as your old one?

They make 2 styles that I know of one is rounded, where the back plate meets the rest of the alt case its has a smooth curve to it

the other style where the back plate meets the rest of the alt it meets at 90 degrees and leaves a crisp edge no smooth curve

if you replaced a curved one with a crisp edge one then you will have a different wiring pattern.
