Thanks for all the info. I live in Winter Park, Co. near Fraser 'coldest spot in the nation'. I would like to drive down to Denver etc. I have had the the car in a heated garage, so not real cold on starting, have had the mixture screws in as far as one turn, all the way out to 3+ turns, no difference. My one last thought is the previous owner said the gas was new, should I drain the tank? Would this cause all the black smoke out the exhaust?
Ah...Winter Park. I took my high school band to the annual concert festival there which is held in April of each year. Good skiing. The kids loved it.

You'll need more than 6* timing up here. Bump it up to 10-12 and you'll run a lot better. Also, try to find some 46-48 size jets if possible. I was running those sizes in a 302 at 7300 ft without any trouble.

OK. Went out to try all options except bumping up the timing. Regaped the points, checked the timing etc. Barely started. Then I noticed a coolant leak on the left side intake manifold next to the valve cover towards the thermostate housing. Is this a sign of a blown gasket? And could this have an effect on the rich running? P.S. had to turn the car off since I could barely breath with the gas fumes and black smoke.

Thanks, I set the timing to 12 degrees, at least it starts and idles now, still rich. A.M. I am going to do a compression check, and a leak down test. Anybody know where I can get a 46-48 size jet? On another post here, should I lower the fuel level in the bowl? I set it as per specs when I did the carb rebuild?

You seem to have several issues, but one is that your intake manifold is leaking.

Yes, thats what I'm thinking. Took it out for a spin with my son, runs ok did a few 'burn outs' him not me. It ran, didn't stall, but the black smoke, gas smell is overpowering. I have intake gaskets ordered at NAPA, will pick up A.M. Is there any trick to remove the intake manifold, and what should I look for after it's removed. Any tricks to put it back on? silicon on the gaskets etc. I only have until Wed. to fix since my wife will be home, and I loose my garage space.

OK. It starts ok, then hesitates and almost dies give it gas, runs, hesitates, gas etc. After a few minutes runs ok, still rich, but runs. I checked the fuel level in the carb, seems ok. But one thing I noticed a few weeks back after it sat for a few days, the fuel bowl was emty. Can the needle seat and valve be leaking back into the fuel pump? I replaced this assembly, but used the original, since the rebuild kit contained a different one. Original has holes at the base, rebuild didn't. Any ideas before I remove the intake manifold?

A blown/leaking power valve will cause a rich idle and a dry fuel bowl.

Not to out do anyone, and I could be wrong, but I doubt it gets any colder than Alaska. I have been in Prudhoe bay with temps colder than -90. I have also been in Fairbanks with temp -50 for weeks at a time. You don't want to take the old stang out in those temps
