running rich
Hi. I have a 66 289 2v that is running 'very' rich. So far the things I have done are as follows, carb rebuild, new points and condenser, wires and plugs, coil and heat riser tube. All seem to working ok. I have not checked the fuel pump. I am timed at 6 btdc. I was wondering if I ned to get new jets. I live at 9000 ft, and the jets that are installed are 50f. Any help would be great. Thanks
If it seems to run rich when its cold (popping and such) its actually running lean. It will take alot of fuel to make a cold engine run rich.
Just some info to see if it will help you

9000 feet? WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Denver is only 6000, up on a mesa or on top of a mountain?
Yeah with thin air like that you need to jet it down considerably. You sure arent lean if it runs good down here with the rest of us. Keep in mind that if you jet it down for th air up there, you will have to put it back if you come down off your mountian. You DO NOT want it to run as lean as that would be, you will put holes in pistons, break or melt ring lands, and quite possibly overheat the exhuast. yeah you can do that.
Not sure what jets you will need for it, I havent ever lived that high. Why dont you move instead?

Try turning your air/fuel mixture screws all the way in on the carb, then come out about 2 turns each. If it is still running rich, then come on out another turn. If still running rich, then it's time to change the jets.
Just thought of somethign else. You can run alot more compression up there than we can down here. Thinner air, and cooler temps provide more octane tolerance. The same thing applies with the compression as the carb. You cant run like that at lower altitudes.
To run a later distributor from a 5.0 with injection, he would also need a computer to run the ignition. The best idea would be to put EFI on it so he doesnt have to worry about altitude as much, but considering its probably stock and he wants to keep it that way, he may not want to do that. So you gotta jet it down, the ignition wont help make it run leaner if the carb is dumping too much fuel.
Thanks for all the info. I live in Winter Park, Co. near Fraser 'coldest spot in the nation'. I would like to drive down to Denver etc. I have had the the car in a heated garage, so not real cold on starting, have had the mixture screws in as far as one turn, all the way out to 3+ turns, no difference. My one last thought is the previous owner said the gas was new, should I drain the tank? Would this cause all the black smoke out the exhaust?
