Default A BIT of dark smoke, that ok?

A buddy was driving behind me the other day and mentioned that under a hard excelleration a bit of dark smoke was coming out of the exhaust. I've never noticed this cause its not bad.

When the car is started, even on cold mornings the most I get is condensation coming out of the pipes and once warm all looks clear to me.
Also, I've only changed the oil once this summer, and my oil level is good, so its not buring oil like crazy.

Is this dark smoke acceptable under a hard acceleration with a car this old. Or is this the start of something a lot worse? This car Actually had a 302 engine in it 15 years ago. Now that thing blew dark smoke all over the place and ate through the oil, so I had the 289 re-built and put it back in and its been great since.

Oil smoke is blue. Black smoke is usually a sign of being too rich. Sounds like your carb is just throwing too much gas at it under acceleration.

if its black and its only under hard acceleration then i wouldnt worry bout it, just a sign that the engine is gettin all the fuel it wants

Rich is safer than lean....but work on a way to either burn the fuel (better ignition) or lean out the carb a little.
