Default 67' mustang engine/suspension help

Hi, there as you can tell i'm new and I have a bunch of questions as I am not a mechanic and I have never done most of the things I want to do to this or any car. Anyway, there is a red 67 mustang my friend is selling for 2500 he said it runs but could run better provided a few newer parts. Advanced Auto said a new egine for this car..., a 4 cylinder would run me around 1300 and 300 off of that when I bring in the old engine. I have never changed out an engine let alone fooled with one before but my grandfather has and knows how to do that stuff. But if I buy this car I want to eventually replace the engine and make this car run good as new is there anything else i'm going to need to buy/replace so that the car is basically a new car once i buy this engine and trade in the old one?? I don't know if there's parts that aren't included that are neccesary for the engine in this 1300$ engine and if there's going to be other parts I need I want to price them up so I know how much it's going to run me. I'm also curious about the suspension..., the car may not need it but it is a 40 year old car and a big investment on my part so I might want to put new suspension in this thing..., I've seen a few suspension kits priced around 300 or so and that's ok but would I need to take the car to a professional mechanic to switch out the suspension or can this be done in my own garage. All I know about suspension is basically they're giant springs and i'm afraid that they'd spring out at me and take my head off or something so I have no idea. Then, last but not least is the 2500 even worth it for this car..., cosmetically it could use a nice touch up on the paint but it's not bad and the only thing missing on the outside is a hubcap.

Sorry for my ignorance; I am not a mechanic and I have never done anything with an engine or suspension I only have experience in changing rotors, brakes, calipers, and tires in my 1996 Hyundai Accent lol.

At that price I would check it pretty closely, especially the floorpans and front and rear framerails. Unless you want to get into a lot of sheetmetal replacement. Do you know a mechanic that can put it up on a rack to check it out?

Mustangs didn't come with 4 cyl in 67. You either had a V6 or V8. If it has a running engine it would be easier to replace with the same type that's in it now. While you are at it you may as well redo the tranny.

Yes I know a few people that would be able to raise the car up to check everything out. This car has been in my heart and dreams for a long time and I won't just get it off the bat especialy cause of the price..., i'm gonna be checking a million more things out but these are some of the things I don't know enough about that i'm looking into before committing to this car. I haven't been able to get a little test drive on it to see how it does actually run or a look under the hood yet thanks to the weather but I will soon. He told me it was a 4 cylinder or I might have misunderstood but i'm also 99.9% sure that I said 4 cylinder 1967 mustang at Advanced Auto when I wanted to know how much they'd give me an engine for. I'll double check on it but thanks alot for the help so far.

I see you have a 67...., how did you get it? Was it in the same condition as this one and what did you find needed to be replaced mainly because of the age of the car and better quality of parts offered nowadays?

A V6 in 67? wow, that must be pretty rare!

Well, I could be wrong but I called my friend and when he gets off of work i'm goin' down the road to take a better look at her and hopefully get a little drive to feel for it myself.

I know it's a 1960's for sure..., you mistake it for a 71 or later but It could be a 68..., i'll have exact details tonight.

Common mistake by people with newer vehicles.. V6 just sounds right, even when its an I6 or inline. There were no I4s in Mustangs untill the MustangII, before that it was a V8 or I6. If someone put a 4 cylinder in there they did alot of work for no real reason.

One thing I would recomend is not givin up the original engine, even if its a 6. Keep it in storage somewhere or run it. An I6 Mustang is a good place to start for a new driver, especially with gas prices today.

Suspension wise, there is an article in the FAQ that adresses it, but the summary is, spindles, brakes, rear axle, springs, sway bars, and all related hardware. Plus the witch from 4 bolt wheels to 5 bolt wheels. Its a rather big job to do.

Jarret is right about the rust, that is the bane of old cars everywhere. You cant drive it if it will fold in half when the doors are opened, or the front springs are poppin out the shock towers. Check everywhere for rust.. its not a tivial thing to look for.

Thanks alot for the adivce andeverything. I still don't think i'll keep the engine because instead of rebuilding the engine myself i'd rather just replace it with a new one and then I could take the old engine in and get money back for it. I intend on using the money given back to go towards a new transmission. Also I found a site specifically dealing with older mustangs and they sell suspension kits...., are these all I would need to upgrade/renew the suspension or is there other things that I would need to buy to do this. Here's a link..., http://www.mustangpartshouse.com/products.php?scid=330

If the engine runs, keep it in there until all other issues (body, interior, paint, knocking out rust, suspension, rear end, transmission) are resolved.

Last I checked, a 302 shortblock is not much more expensive than a 200 shortblock.

check out other engine builders before settling on advance auto for a major purchase like that.

Robb-buy the car-you will love it-It is going to cost 1000's of dollars to bring it up to safe/driveable-just bite the bullet and go for it-you have time to make this a nice car.
Your going to need shocks, springs, brakes .....then repair the body rust....then little things are going to go up....starter,power steering pump.....It will be a labor of love.....2500 gets you in the game, but just be ready to sink some money into the car. Good luck Scott
