Default Help Identifying My Alternator

okay my engine isnt original (289), its a 302 that was built by a speed shop a few years ago...obviously wasnt taken care of too greatly by the PO but anyways, i need help to ID my alternator...if its original, of its a "1-wire" etc..... my battery continually dies after i drive it. I have even bought two brand new batteries so its definitely not a battery problem, its just like as if its not being recharged as the car is running....

anyways, heres some pictures....

the reason i want to identify it is to know if its internal regulator kind or external...i dont see anything that looks like a "regulator" when i looked up what a regulator looks like.....

That's a stocker. You'll need an external regulator. You're also missing at least one nut from the back of the alternator.

Get one of these and a regulator. You may want to get a new alternator, too. That one is just plain UGLY.[:'(]

hahaha, your tellin me man...i want to pull the engine so bad and repaint it all.....im looking at engine hoist prices...i see one at kragen for about $160...not too bad....although ive never really pulled an engine before so its prob not the greatest idea.....

anyways....so i need a new alternator harness....if i get the one "w/o tach" will i still be able to install a tach in the future???

also........i definitely need a new alternator regardless...that things a piece of crap, and im going to be needing a lot more amps...what is enough amps for a sound system and A/C and the regular stuff such as lights and what not???

After thinking about it, you may try a 1-wire alternator. The only problem I had/have is that it's a bit deeper than the stocker and a bracket bolt had to be modified for clearance. It'll have more than enough power for a good sound system. You'll need to remember to rev the engine a little to get the charging circuit activated, but that's not a big problem for me...

Throw in a circuit breaker between the alternator and the battery for some added security. Jeg's also sells the install kit with some good quality wire and connectors.

You can remove the existing wiring and replace it with a single cable.

I don't know if Jeg's still has the kit I bought. I looked and didn't see it. It is possible I bought it somewhere else. Don't go with 10 gauge wire for the alternator. I'm running 4 and it will get warm if the battery is a little low.
