I appreciate the comments on 15's. Anyone have ANY pictures of 15x6's with 215 60 15's mounted? As for the 14's, I dont think anyone would criticize since it was what they came with. I tend to be old school and but am looking for a slightly more modern appearance but DEFINATELY dont want to deal with clearance issues. Thanks.

"14" wheels just dont look good on a mustang"

I guess the original 1 million owners in just the second year of production might disagree with you along w/myself.

ORIGINAL: Decurion

personally I would never use a 14 inch wheel unless it was free. and even then I would have to think about it. 14" wheels just dont look good on a mustang. Take a look at the highly optioned cars of the day versus the base model cars. Almost any car has 14" on the base model, and 15s on the up-level version. Take a look at the race cars of the day. Again, 15". They handle better and fill the wheel well. They hardly cost more, so in my humble *cough* opinion, theres no reason NOT to go with 15s. Take a look at Wheel Vintiques for the Magnum 500s, and Mustang ponys, and other mustang wheels. A 225/60/15 on a 7" rim should fill the wheel well enough, yet still leave room for the suspension and turning.

I figured my flamesuit would get a good testing for saying what I did, but I still stand by it. Ford didnt use 14s because they were so good looking, they used them because they looked good enough AND because the technology for 15s cost more and the engineers and bean counters didnt feel the added cost would outweigh the performance and asthetic advantages. Given the fact that COSMETICS are his focus here and that all the original style wheels are available in 14" or 15", why go with the smaller one? What I said about the more highly optioned cars still holds true today. The base models come with 16s, GTs with 17s, and the optional wheels are 18s, with tuners offering 18 and 19 inch wheels.

Since Im already looking for a set of Magnum 500s, I thought Id price out the difference between the 14x7 215/60/14 versus the 15". For the tires I went to Tirerack.com and priced a 215/60 BFG Radial T/A and went to Jegs for the Wheel Vintiques Magnum 500 style 7" wide, along with center caps, valve stems and lug nuts. Given that youre already installing non-original wheels, whats the point of going with 14s?

14x7 Mag500.....$124.99.(4)....$499.96
215/60/14 BFG...$66.00..(4)....$264.00
center caps........$29.99..(4).....$119.96
chrome valve stems(set).(1)....$7.49
chrome lug nuts $5.99....(5)....$29.95

lug nuts come in packs of 4. that way if you have a 4 lug car, you buy 4 sets, 5 lug- 5 sets, 8 lug- 8 sets, etc

I see. I just bought from Summit a Gorilla pack of 20 (4 that were locking). It also came with 4 chrome valve stems. Decurion, if you're ordering from Jegs this similar set is a better deal than buying separately.

That is a very good point you made Decurion. And, if you are going to upgrade to disk brakes on the front, then you will have more luck with clearance issues with the 15's. To me, I see very little difference in the 14 and the 15" rims, but since mine came stock from the factory with 14's, I will stick with them. And, I doubt seriously that Ford even considered the tiny cost of putting 14's or 15's on the originals. You are grabbing at straws with that. Back then, the 14's were the most popular size. It was unusual to find a mid-sized car with 15's.
