well, I dont know, I dont think it is such far-fetched idea. Look at the race cars of the day. 11" (or so) wide hard slicks were the best you could get. Same for the corner burners. Big/wide rubber just didnt exist back then. Not that 15" was anything close to exotic, but I bet it cost a enough that Ford didnt think it was worth it.
