which styled steel wheels?
Gang,
I'm into the cosmetics since I solved my bad gas milage issue. I got a reminder this past weekend about wheels (lost a spinner hubcap in the napa wine country last weekend...lets just say I was nervous because it came to rest near a couple of high end vehicles...I quickly grabbed it and walked efficiently back to my car).
Anyway, I have been looking at 65's versus 66's. I like to the look of trim rings but dont wanna have to chase them down (the fact is that rings/hubcaps do fall off...its a matter of when). Also, I want to go either 14x6 or possibly 14x7 (not thinking about 15's...should I be?).
Does anyone have any experiences or recommendations? I think 14x5 are too skinny and I want a more muscular look but do not know what size to go with. I'm aiming for 14x7 with a 215x60x14 tire but am undecided. Anyone have an pictures such as front corner/rear corner with the bigger than stock styled steel wheels?

Here's a pic of my Mag 500's. I am running the 14 X 7 wheels with 195/70R14 tires. You could go a little bigger on the tire though. I think either the original styled steel wheels or the Mag 500's look the best on the 65 and 66 Mustangs.
I went with the '65 style with out the trim rings. I've had a couple of vehicles over the years that had the trim rings and was nerver really nuts about them. I've got an aquaintence here that has a '65 fastback with the '66 style, and I don't think they look as good as the ones I have. I went with the 14 x 5 since I have an inline 6. but one of the major catalogues has 14 x 7 listed, and I think you can even get them in a 15 x 7.
Scott Drake makes the best SS wheel repo right now. size of wheels is personal taste. Mine are like Glen's, 195 70 r 14's which were very close to the largest factory wheel avail. at the time on a Mustang.
if it's a 66, i would use a trim ring, 64.5-65 none.
also, early 65's had argent paint on the ss wheels and went to a dark charcoal although i'm not sure when in 65.

I do like the concept of trim rings on my 66 (you dont see the balancing weights).
But trust me, they do fall off when you hit potholes! I hate the idea of buying 6 rings with the anticipation that I will loose any. I think I'm gonna go with the 65's. 14x6 seems to be the size to go with (prolly 3.375" back spacing but apparantely, there are multiple backspacings for 6").
Thanks for the pics!

personally I would never use a 14 inch wheel unless it was free. and even then I would have to think about it. 14" wheels just dont look good on a mustang. Take a look at the highly optioned cars of the day versus the base model cars. Almost any car has 14" on the base model, and 15s on the up-level version. Take a look at the race cars of the day. Again, 15". They handle better and fill the wheel well. They hardly cost more, so in my humble *cough* opinion, theres no reason NOT to go with 15s. Take a look at Wheel Vintiques for the Magnum 500s, and Mustang ponys, and other mustang wheels. A 225/60/15 on a 7" rim should fill the wheel well enough, yet still leave room for the suspension and turning.

Huh??? Ford seemed to think they looked good. That's why they came from the factory with 14" wheels.
