That'd be a solid state voltage regulator. You probably have a mechanical voltage regulator stock...which would be quite a bit larger and look like a cube.

Trust me, that solid state VR is more reliable.

Makes your high performance voltmeter look better, too!

That is not a voltage regulator. Are you sure that little box is attached to the Alternator? The VR is located on the passenger side front of the engine bay next to the radiator. Here is what it looks like from the back side.

yeah i just bought the same thing that u showed in the picture, but i mean where is my voltage regulator if all the wires that should be going into it are going into the little cube thing??? the wires fit onto the little metal things coming off the new voltage regulator...so i mean it must be some type of voltage regulator......although, prob a wrong type. there are four of those female plugs that go onto the male plugs on the new voltage regulator....so i mean it makes sense that its the "voltage regulator".........

either way, i assume the car came stock with the type that you pictured...i just cant figure out why there is no holes for it???

Your car came with a mechanical VR that is even fatter than the one pictured. I have no idea where that little box came from. At any rate, wire it correctly and use the one you bought from NAPA and locate it in the correct spotl. We have a wiring diagram in the FAQ for the alternator if you need it.

locate it...but there are no holes...so do i just try to drill new mounting holes? and what does a mechanical voltage regulator look like? is it similar and did it mount to the engine bay wall (passenger)???

and would it be ok to mount in the shock tower as there is absolutely no room between the shock tower and batt.....

a picture of a 68 with external regulator would be a lot of help....
