Cleaning engine compartment
My receptionist was asking me how she could clean her engine compartment. It's not a mustang it's a geo metro I hope it is OK to discuss non mustangs. But I probably will need to do it to my Stang. She only has some dust and a little grease on the engine. I told her to go to a do it your self car wash and use the power wash on the engine and compartment.
I read the FAQ on engine compartment cleaning and painting. It mentioned using a power washer but gave no specific procedures. Is there anything that needs to be covered that would be damaged by water? Such as electrical wiring. And should the car be off or left running. I would think to bring it to operating temperature and turn it off but I think I remember a mechanic friend would do it with the car running. I would also think a little pretreatment of spray on engine cleaner before the power washer would be good.

Wish I had a receptionist.........................
I covered all the spots where water could seep into the engine and then pressure washed and scrubbed everyething else. Worked ok for me.

Just use a good degreaser and pressure was it. If there's a ton of muck, let the degreaser sit for a while and let it break it down.
If there is indeed a build-up of oil that has burned onto the heads, etc. then yes, use a degreaser and power spray it off after it has sat on a hot engine. Yes, you want the engine hot. They may even have to use a scraper, wire brush or whatever to break the crud loose. However, if it is only dust and small amounts of oil, tell her to get some Simple Green for Autos at the auto store. The household Simple Green won't work as well. Since I keep mine clean, and don't allow any build-up, I just use the soap setting on the power washer, then rinse it.
The distributor and the carb need to be covered. I use zip lock bags. However, some water may get into the dizzy cap, so tell her to have a clean dry rag handy to wipe out the inside of the dizzy after spraying. If a little water gets into the carb, no problem, as a little water will blast off the carbon build up on the top of the pistons, but you just don't want it to drown.

I would suggest she slip into a bikini and get a big sponge, and lots and lots of bubbles. Wash thoughly, and don't be afraid to get wet.

BTW for those of you that want the soap and lots of bubbles here is something you might like.
Don't worry soaring it is more of a humorous clip rather than pornography.
