Default Surface rust removal ...

I just took all of the vinyl off the seats and the frames have some rust i'd like ot get rid of. What't the best product or way to do this? Once Done, I want to sand down, prime and repaint in black before recovering with new seat upholstery. Any recommendations on what kind of rust remover/paint/primer to use? car is a convertible.

Go to Home Depot and get Phosphate Plus. Removes rust and leaves the part coated with phosphate, which is a rust resistant coating and an excellent base for paint.

You could use plain steel wool. But I wouldn't use the sos. Getting all the sope out is a pain.

Go to Ace Hardware and get a bottle of "Rust Away" and paint that on the frame after you have sanded it down with about am 80 grit sandpaper. Then just paint it.

Guys,

thank you! I took your recommendations and I cannot believe that I actually brought a good part of it down to the bare metal..nice and shiny!! Tomorrow I clean up and paint! I bought Rustoleum Automobile paint...primser in dark gray and the black gloss for the seat frame. Any thoguhts before I paint (good or bad?)

Wear one of those cheap paper masks if you are going to be spraying in an enclosed area.
