Default 66 Mustang

Well small dilema here... 1966 Mustang with a 289 which was rebuilt after it failed catastrophically(oil related issues). Well the thing is installed and it has started but the problem is when it starts it stalls right after. My girlfriend's dad says it might have something to do with the carburetor's air to fuel ratio since it's aftermarket (edelbrock). Well I was wondering what other things could cause the car to start but stall right after? The car is getting spark, don't know about fuel pressure but I'm sure he's already checked for that.

Thanks...

Take the wire off the Positive post of the coil. Turn the key on and see if it will light your test light. There are two circuits to the coil. One from the starter solenoid that is only activated while the key is in start, and one from the Run position of the key switch that goes through a pink wire under the dash.

Good luck,

Well the car starts and runs for a second and then stalls...so would it still be starter and coil related? Because it's getting spark still.

Thanks again.

i think maybe its getting fludded ( <spelling ) with gas. maybe the timing is off, or a valve is not working, check the spark plugs as well.

Sounds like it maybe a fuel/carb issue. Take the fuel line off the carb and turn the engine over for a few seconds. If you are getting an adequate supply of fuel to the carb, then we can move on to carb issues. If not, then you may have a fuel filter stopped up or the fuel pump is not working properly. Do this test, then get back with us.

Well I'm talking with my girlfriend right now and telling her everything...since it's her car and her dad is the one who's working on it. I honestly don't know much about mustangs and near nothing about carburetors. I'm a Volvo guy as funny as it sounds, but ya my gut says fuel related. Since he said he was also redoing wiring and he's got spark...

Maybe we need to be talking to your girlfriend's dad.

I plan on going over there tomorrow and give a helping hand. Hopefully he can figure it out today, I'm just trying to give some ideas for things to check that he may not have or not known to check.
Thanks for all the help guys.

I'm thinking the same thing, it sounds like he's losing his coil voltage once the key is returned to the run position. The ballast wire has either broken or somehow got disconnected during the motor swap.

Try running a jumper wire straight from the battery to the terminal on the coil, so you have a constant voltage regardless of the key position, if the problem goes away then the culprit is somewhere in your ballast circuit.
