Cowl Vent
Another question. I want to get at the passenger's side cowl vent on a 68 mustang with AC to check it for rust and possibly install one of those plastic hats if it isn't bad. Looking in the manual, it appears that I will need to remove the evaporator to get access to the the cowl vent on that side. Is this correct or is there an easier way, hopefully much easier. I wouldn't consider removing the cowl from the outside easier. [sm=smiley36.gif]

Well if you are simply checking to see if the cowl is rusted through, just pour a glass of water through the vents. if it leaks onto your floor then your cowl is gone and needs to be replaced (major pain in the *** so I hear)
I already used a hose to test it. The driver's side leaked. I've already removed the vent, and took a wire cup brush to the cowl to remove what appears to be remnants of a seal and, of course, rust. It still looks like a candidate for the plastic cowl hat as the metal hat is not detached from the cowl though rusted through in many spots and the cowl itself only had some minor superficial rust. I did see literally 3 or 4 drops of water when I ran a hose on the passengers side, so I think that it is a candidate for the plastic hat repair as well; however, I won't know for sure until I get a look at it. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to remove the evaporator to get at the cowl hat, despite how it looks in the shop manual. I was hoping there was some mysterious way to get at it without removing the evaporator, through the glove box maybe?
Well if you can get to the holes easily, and they arn't toooooo bad, you might be able to use some JB Weld to seal them up untill u can replace the cowl. Just a thought, I believe it would work. If you only saw a few drops coming through then the cowl might not be too far gone.
