Mustang badges/emblems/ponies
I just bought a new 289 emblem, mustang and the pony for my 66 front fender-what is the trick on getting the old ones off?I cant get off the retainer clip on the 289 emblem-how do you get to the lower ones(pony and mustang)-I thought this was going to be a breeze.
Once i get them off do you put the little retainer clip on the post and then shove it through,or do youpush it thru and put the clip on the back side?
Any advise would be great- Thanks Newbie Scott

Hi,
Indeed, once on, there intended to stay on. The original clip - called a "tinnerman" is a
small metal plate with tiny barbs that bite into the posts on the badge. Once the two posts slip
through the holes in your fender, the tinnerman press fits to the posts and againest the inside of your fender.
Its next to impossible to get them off without breaking apart the existing badge and scraping your paint along with it.
In most cases, the fender is removed to do it without damage to the show side of fender. The inside fender axcess is typically
closed off by a metal panel that bolts to the inner upper fender, behind the front tire and lower fender.
If this panel is removed and if road debris and or rustproofing isn't covering it up,
you might be able to slip up a slot (flathead) screwdriver between the tinnerman and the fender,
carefully prying the tinnerman away from the fender.
Then using a pair of needle nose pliers, wedge the pliers between the tinnerman and the fender,
manually working the badge away from the fender. Its a lot of work either way.
Good luck.
