I think the whine sounds horrible. Is there a such thing as one that doesn't make the noise, like the 240 and 300 engines?

Only if you buy a cheap pj gear drive or one of the summit POS gear drives. Spend the extra 60-70 bucks on the edelbrock version. It doesn't chatter like the pete jackson ones. It seriously imitates a blower whine to the T, I get people asking me all the time if its charged. At 30-40mph with the exhaust humming and that thing whinning it sounds BADASS.

Yeah, I've heard the good ones, but I really don't like the sound of the blower either. Just my opinion. I can see though where they would be better that the chain.

you won't have to worry bout your timing chain jumping
I have never heard of this happening to a chain...a belt yes, chain no.

Chains will jump, too. I've had this happen once on a 390. The enigne had quite a few miles on it, of course, but the point is that chains can and will jump when they are worn, just like a belt. The big difference is how long it takes to stretch the chain far enough versus a belt.

I always wanted gear drive ever since I was 16. Last year I bought a set of SA gears and installed it when I did my cam change. I liked it for a while. The noise made it so you couldn't hear anything else. I took them out this year and sold it on e-bay. I got my fix and like my car better w/o gear drive. I'm having problems posting videos on putfile. If any of you want to hear it, e-mail me at woosley@alaska.com and I'll send you a clip. Don't PM me becasue I don't believe I can send a clip that way.

Interesting discussion--As to converting - In gear to gear the cam turns backwards (counterclockwise) as the crank turn clockwise,

In a chain system both gears turn the same way (Think bicycle)

Signed---Been there--
Every other gear in a series turns the same way. The idler gears that you put in between the sprockets turn reverse and the cam turns the same as the crank....
