Not sure how 3D modeling is going to help you make a living, but what do I know?
3D modelling is becoming (if not already) the fastest and most efficient way to conceptualize/visualize virtually any consumer product. Go to Target, Ikea, DWR, even Ford! Most everything by any of these suppliers starts with a computer model which helps designers visualize the final product. It is DEFINITELY a living, thats why I do it!

Here's a concept lounger/coffee table set I did a few months ago. Made completely with CAD software (Rhino, Photoshop).
AHA! I didn't know that. Thanks for the education. BTW, those chairs don't look very comfortable.

Ya kinda rigid huh? It was a quick concept for a modular chair/cocktail table design. One of many, but see thats the cool thing about 3D modelling. You can flush out concepts like nothing. Its more for visualizing possible relationships for the project itself, without having to physically build variations (which would take lots of time and lots of $$$).

Makes perfect sense. We had a CAD program at school where I taught, but I thought that was a house building CAD class. Ya know......computer generated blue prints. I guess you guys can whip out just about anything these days, huh?

CAD is used in a lot of different design fields, from architecture, product design - consumer electronics, housewares, Automotive industry, to interior design, graphic design, and industrial systems. There are TONS of programs: most common that many know is good ol AutoCAD, others include: Rhino3d, Solidworks, Alias/Maya, Pro-E, 3D Studio Max, Unigraphics....the list goes on forever!
