Default Tilting steering wheel

This subject just came up through a PM from one of our members. With a 65-66, the steering column is a one piece that is attached to the steering box, and the box has to come out in order to get the steering column completely out. Now, if a guy wants to put in a tilting steering wheel, what steps need to take place to get the job done? I guess what I am asking is how do you hook this up to a 65-66?

I'm curious as to why you would want to do it?

I took my single piece column out of the 66 and replaced it with a collapsable one for safety. Never occured to me to try a tilt column.

I'll be interested to hear more
cheers

Well, for very tall and possibly hefty guys, getting into and out of our classics is a challenge, and the tilting wheel would get the steering wheel out of the way for easier access to the seat. Just wondering if any of you guys have ever done it, and just give some feedback in what all is involved. As you can see by the aftermarket tilting wheel steering column I posted, they are available, which is a good thing, but with the 65-66 original steering column being attached to the steering box without a rag joint, it seems the steering box has to come out as well. Don't know....that's why I am asking.

That's not an answer to the query. Are you still trying to get your post count up?

Yes, as a tall and husky guy myself, a tilt option is pretty darn interesting, and I'm glad there's a place that sells aftermarket ones.

I'll eagerly wait to hear from people with more experience on this subject.

I read the description of the tilt column from that link:

"Mustang steering wheel - no adapter is required since the tilt column shaft uses the Ford spline size"

What does that mean?

Don't know. That is the query. It appears there is a threaded end to that column, but there is no threaded end to the column as far as I know. I guess the answer is to call the company.

Nope, just wanted to voice my opinion about the rag joints. I was absolutly thrilled to learn my mustang doesn't have a rag joint you have to replace. I had to replace one on my ford truck, and it was a pain, nothing worked right.

That still doesn't answer the question. Just opinion about rag joints.
