Heater box
I have a broken and leaking heater box for my 1966 mustang and i cant figure out how to remove it so i can put a new one in. There are brackets keeping the heater box toghter and thats all i could see holding it on. Thanks
Well you have to un-do the 4 or 5 bolts around the blower motor ont he firewall. That's pretty much all that is keeping it inside the car. But inorder to get it out all the way you are going to have to remove your dash pad, and possibly part of the actual dash. Have fun, this project is a pain in the ***.
On the '66, starting on the engine side;
it's just the two hoses, the two wires to the heater blower motor, the 4 bolts around the blower motor.
Inside the car;
you need to disconnect the three cables from the heater box, the two defroster ducts, and one sheet metal screw for the bracket at the fresh air intake. Other people have written/said they had to remove the cardboard glove box. I've never had to do that. YMMV.
A couple of tips:
* Zip tie the heater ducts up out of the way so they don't get damaged during removal/installation.
*The little clip washers that hold the control cables onto the arms; I cut them off with side cutters, and get new ones from Ace Hardware for the reinstall.
*clean the bullet connectors for the heater motor.
*I would suggest measuring the length of each hose for the heater core, and then install the new hose with about 6" of extra hose on each one to the heater core, before installing back in the car. Set the box in the car and feed the hose through the cowl, then hook them up before bolting up the new box. Fill the cooling system with distilled water and pressure test for about 15 minutes to insure you have no leaks. At that point go ahead and fasten in the box and reconnect everything else. Drain your coolant system 1/2 way, cut out the additional 6" on each hose, and add straight coolant for a 50/50 mixture.
Finish off by burping the system, and a final pressure test.
Good luck,
