I am the current owner or a 73 Mach 1 and would like to add a new pony to the stall. I have the opportunity to buy a 64.5 Convertible w/ the 170 and power top. It is an untouched original with auto trans and some rust. The owner has new floors, doors, and quarter panels to repair it that he will sell with it for $2500. What type of money will this car bring if professionally restored to all original? Also, I understand that the 6's were rare and especially rare with the power top. The motor needs a fuel pump to run with 60,000 original miles.
Not hardly. The inline 6 was the base engine for all early Mustangs. There were probably more of those produced than any other engine. Besides, "rare" doesn't necessarily equate to collectable. A '64.5 with an under-powered 170 cid could be a fun driving car, but it will be very easy to pour more money into it than it's worth (convertible or not). If you're hoping for a car you can flip and make a profit, you should probably keep looking.
Like they said those 170 I6 are not worth as much as the 289 V8 verts.
Sounds like a good parts car
Or just drop a V8 in her during the restoration.
The 289 would be a lot more fun.
the 6 170 is probably rarer than the 200 the power top is unusally, but remember 120,000 of the 64.5 were sold, low serial number would boast the price.
... just drop a V8 in her during the restoration.
The 289 would be a lot more fun.
For cryin' out loud, don't advise another V8 swap! The inline sixes are great little engines (be it the 170 or the 200). If you want a V8, then find a V8 car to start with. But converting every T-code out there to a 302 is just silly.
