Default RE: top loader

A friend used to drag race one in a 1964 Galaxie (4000 lbs) with a 427 medium riser turning in the mid 12s. He broke the input shaft and went to the NASCAR input shaft, then he broke the output and went to the NASCAR output. He then managed to break a 9" pinion. He was probably making 7-800hp., but gobs of torque. You can break anything, another friend wrung the output shaft on his 1970 Torino CJ when he ran it so low on oil it welded the third gear to the shaft and broke it. They are one of the ruggedest car transmissions going with maybe the Mopar 4 speed a close rival. It will take a whole lot more than a Borg-Warner or Muncie.

I wouldn't be a bit afraid to hook up 500HP to a Toploader...big time heavy-duty.

Toploaders are nearly indestructible now 7-800 horse power is a bit much. But 500 should be no problem at all.
