Default Timing lite or timing problem?

Tuned up the inline 6, set the dwell, new plugs, wire, points, etc. While using the timing light, I get an occasional pause (no flash) with the light. Could this is a bad plug/wire/whatever OR bad timing light? Car runs relatively well but fuel mileage dropped from 16mpg to 13mph WTF!!! Was hoping to get into the 20's mpg with a decent tuneup....any ideas????

Yep...there is a 2 second black out in the timing light on each wire. Strobe works for 3 to 20 seconds then 2 second pause then back to strobe again...then 2 second pause, etc...what you thinking?

How does it run (rough, smooth, etc)? Are you brave enough to grab a plug wire with it running (good wire = no problem...bad wire = funky dance)? The intermittant may well be the pickup on the timing light, but could be points that are sticking/not firing properly.

How does your exhaust smell? Feel? Shouldn't smell gassy and should feel pretty smooth...

16mpg from a sixer is horrid. My high strung 302 with 3.80 gears is competitive.

Runs good, idles fine...timing appears on the money. No change in engine sound when the timing light cuts out...

Smells like exhaust...strong smell but not gassy...don't know about the feel...
