Default 66' GT Steering Wheel

I want to replace my steering wheel on my '66 but am not crazy about the reproductions.

I have locaed on brand new original wheel by the owner wants $2,500! (And he is not sure he even wants to sell it). Does anyone have any suggestions/resources for original GT steering wheels in mint condiiton? Is this price in line with fair market values?

It is my undersatnding the these old wheels are very difficult if not impossible to restore.

And also, why do almots all the old streeeing wheels have seperation cracks in them. Is it becaise the plastic shrinks or is overstressed around the anchor points?

The wheel on my 65 has a crack that almost looks like a seam. It is perfectly straight all the way around. I wonder if this was a seam that has just separated over time.

Are there ways to repair these that does not leave a noticeable patch?

Mine looked identical to what you described. Years ago, there was a place that would replace the plastic with real wood that was supposed to look real nice. Can't remember the place though, sorry.

Most likely that crack is at the 9:00 position. Caused by ultraviolet through the drivers window. There are a couple of very good restoration places. It's not cheap (I've been quoted >$350.00 depending on original condition). I've got an original core with good chrome, I'm saving just in case. The repro's are good from about 10' away.
Keep your eyes on Hemming's motor news, or possibly check with some Mustang clubs. someone may be holding on to one.
Originally I was looking to get the optional Shelby wheel, until I found out they were selling used for upwards of $6K. A repro for $350.00 started sounding pretty good after that.

Good luck,

Who the heck is going to spend $2,500 on a steering wheel???? Not me!!!!! Go with a nice reproduction with a modest cost.
