Default thermo choke ?

Can someone tell me how to tell if the choke is working properly or if it is adjusted correctly?

well all the choke does is helps cut off air till the engine heats up. should just be shut on start up and at operating temp should be open. all their is on a carb is a flange that goes from the carb to the exhaust manifold/headers. i dont really know ne way of tuning it tho

Take the air cleaner off and open the throttle all the way open. If the butterfly is shut completely, then it is adjusted correctly. When the engine reaches operating temperature, the butterfly will be completely open. There are two three different types of choke systems. Manual choke is where you have to pull a **** that is hooked up to a cable that manually opens and closes the butterfly. Exhaust manifold heat choke is operated by a spring that heats up and opens up the butterfly as the manifold heats up. Then there is the electric choke that when the ignition switch is turned on it slowly heats up and the butterfly opens.

Soaring- When I open the throttle the butterfly does not move. The butterfly is about half way closed.

Which style choke do you have? If it is the exhaust manifold style, then you need to unscrew the three screws that hold the black circle in place and turn that black circle until the butterfly closes, then tighten down the screws. This is done when the engine is cold.
Here is where mine is adjusted.

I have the exhaust manifold style but it is not hooked up. It has a rubber cap on the inlet of the choke. Will it work this way? I have the carb clip like you have. I will try and set it as you instructed, Thanks

No it's not going to work if it's not hooked up. If you adjust it the choke will remain closed. You need to hook it back up or maybe switch it to manual. They sell kits that will hook up a cable.

Oh ok! That's a heater hose next to it, right? That's how it detects how warm the engine is? That would by why mine doesn't work. I didn't know what that curved piece of flat metal was for.

There should ba a line that runs from the passenger side exhaust manifold to the choke. As the exhaust heats up it opens the choke.

Yea, that's what my mustang had on it. But it would never work so I bought a holley 4160 w/ electric choke and did away with all that. Much easier IMO.
