I bought this one new in 1969,put 14968 miles on it and parked it in 1972.Brought it out of hiding in 2005 after making some improvements, and have added 4500 miles to it since then.I drive it to shows within 50 miles and trailer to Carlisle and a few other large shows. And,there is nothing like 600hp of big block Boss power under your right foot. Its about the most fun you can have with a tank of 110 Sunoco.

69Boss,
Had a shot at a Boss 429 about ten years ago from a local collector friend of mine in Greenwich, CT who owned two of them plus a few other over the top Fords. Very tasty cars and yes, they do qualify as "very special"!! Never had a chance to drive one but I'm not dead yet. I couldn't afford to buy one ten years ago and not a whole lot has changed since then. They have appreciated 'just a bit' in today's market. Stock verses stock the Boss 429 would always eat a Hemi's lunch! Hope you take it out once in awhile and exercise it. Talk about a velvet hammer! Nothing like a big block. I've still got two.

i honestly think i could be completely satisfied with having only your exact car for the rest of my life and never being allowed to own another car....like i honestly wouldn't even care...

Thanks shifty101,
Unfortunatly, the Boss doesn't make a very practical daily driver. To easy to get tickets, that's why it was parked for 35 years.

The question begs to be asked, you kept the stock wheels didn't you? As you've been to Carlisle with the car I hope you've seen some build pictures of how and what had to be done to shovel that large lump between the front towers. From the windshield forward the Boss 429 was a hand made car. I sent you a PM so that I can email you a few engine shots of my big Fords. Can never get picture posting on forums to do what I want. A FE 427 side oilier with cross mounted 4bbls fills up a lot of space in the 64 Thunderbolt. The engine bay in the Cobra looks spacious in comparison.

No, I don't have the stock wheels,Isold them in 1971.But,they won't work with the 4 wheel Baer disc brakes anyway.
What's going to Carlisle have to do with knowing how the Boss's were built??

Thought someone there might also have a "29" with photos of the assembly. Such a huge show attracts lots of special cars and some very educated owners that can't wait to share photos and bits of history. Kind of like going to a real fun school.

I have lots of photos of my rebuild process.Really though, the most significant thing about the Boss 429 as far as under the hood is that the shock towers were cut back to fit the monster in the engine bay.
From the factory they were slowed down with a smog pump, restrictive exhaust manifolds, and to small a carb, and a wimpy cam.
I have since corrected their errors by deleating the smog, installing custom made stainless steel headers, dual 715 Holleys, and a solid roller cam lifting titanium valves.
With an MSD dist locked out at 36 degrees and a 4:11 rear all I can say is hang on for a thrill ride.

Did you make the linkage plate for mounting your throttle cable? Very slick looking piece. Looks like a Lokar cable but the plate under the rear 715 and actual linkage looks custom made. The S&H air cleaners let all the little details show nicely (pricey little rascals aren't they). How much cam did you slide in there and how much compression are you running. You mentioned you use hard to find 110 Sunoco fuel. Sounds like your are in the 11 to 1 area minimum.

I bought the linkage plate , it mounts on the 2 carb studs and uses a Lokar cable. The carb linkage is from Carl's Ford Parts,a simple 1 piece progressive rod.S&H cleaners have K&N filters for a little more air, compression 11:1/2-1, and the magic stick is a Comp solid roller with 657in&664ex lift with 280& 286 duration. All this makes for a powerband from 1200 to 7000rpm and runs with 18in vac.I suprised myself when I checked mileage and got 14.5mpg.I sure hope the 110 will be available for a few more years, the Boss is like its owner,it only likes to drink high octane good stuff!

Mid '60's is correct. It was designed to beat the Hemi's on the NASCAR tracks. It was shortly banned by NASCAR as the Hemi guys screamed foul (it fulfilled its design mission rather well). It was a three valve, gear driven overhead cam engine (two intake and one exhaust) with sodium filled exhaust valves based on the Ford FE 427 side oilier engine. Very few had two fours as pictured due to NASCAR's rules. Holman and Moody had most of them (you could buy one in a crate in the 60's from H&M for about $10,000.00). I think Tasca Ford in RI had one or two also (could be wrong). All were shipped in a crate and not in a car. Dyno Don Nicholson raced one in an altered wheel base '65 Mustang (early AFX days). It was scary fast and made a sound not soon forgotten. If you have a ton of money the after market will let you re create one. My old school room mate (Carter Getty, if you know Shelby Cobra's) stuffed one in his AC Cobra. He took it out of his '63 light weight factory Galaxie drag car. It had a fairly wide torque curve. Only a few Cobras ever had this engine stuffed into them (Shelby never did one) as the heads filled every inch of the engine compartment. Every gear was first gear! Ah, the good old days.

what a fascinating topic...sorry to intrude on the Boss9 stuff, but here's 3 photos of cammer drag cars including Dyno Dons...
