Default Odometer

Hello, well im close to droppin in my rebuilt 200 and i was wondering if there is a quick and effective way to put my odometer at 0 miles. Spinning the cable with a lathe or drill is going to literally take me days. Or is buying a new speedometer the way to go?

Thank you

It has been probably 15 or more years since I did the same thing, but I know for sure that I didn't hook it up to a drill. IIRC, it wasn't too difficult to take it apart and spin the numbers.

Good luck.

And why exactly would you be tampering with the odo? If you don't document the miles and try to go with the zero, your insurance can nail you pretty hard if you have classic insurance (which you should have with a classic). My agent was real hesitant to write in zero miles on my '65 F250 (new everything except 80% of the cab metal) due to its modernized speedo. I had to fill out an extra form, but could have provided the original speedo.

Yep. I had replaced my speedo to get the zero. I wouldn't use a drill on an original (takes too much time anyway...1000rpm=60mph).

They don't know I'm replacing my speedo yet again. The sending unit for Autometer doesn't work in my truck and the Nordskog unit is a POS and doesn't have the signal strength to work properly. So, in goes a mechanical speedo from Autometer.[>:]

miles are off anyways, when i bought the car, the speedo cable was disconnected and all. and like Halz said everything is goin to be new. therefore i would like to start from 0 miles. has anybody else had experience on taking the unit apart and moving the numbers around?

I tried to do that on my father-in-law's 1980 Chevy and wound up having to buy a new one. If you can do it, let us know your secret.

Man don't you guys know ANYTHING.
1. Get the car's back wheels up on blocks.
2. Put the car in reverse
3. Put something heavy on the gas pedel
4. Continue with any comedy hyjinks you can think of!

FWIW, odometer reporting is only required in CA (though still encouraged) if the vehicle is less than 10 years old. I sold my last Mustang without even filling it in because I had no idea how many true miles the vehicle had and I sure wasn't going to certify to a number. I get a laugh out of these early cars I see for sell that advertise as XX,XXX original miles. Yeah, 1xx,xxx or 2xx,xxx or 3xx,xxx ... [:@]
