Header installed in '71 302 4-speed!!!
Finally got the driver's side header to fit in my '71 with a 302 4-speed. The aftermarket doesn't make 'em, so I'm having to make my own starting with a set of Hedman's I had laying around (meant to buy the shorties, but hit the wrong button).
I tried factory 5.0L headers, but they don't clear the steering sector box.[:@] So, Mr. Sawzall went after the longtubes.
Now, I just need to fill in the holes left by the sawzall in the #7 and #8 tubes (more like 12 inches of missing pipe). I'm thinking of running the #7 tube into #6 and #8 into #5. I don't want to join #7 and #8 since they are sequential in the firing order. Of course, I'd probably have to modify the passenger side making them into a try-Y as well just to make 'em even. I'd join #1 and #2, then #3 and #4.
I looked at the factory try-Y, but they join #2 with #4 (again, sequential cylinders in the firing order...???). That made me wonder if they would have fit. Looks close, but I don't think I'll be spending $200 just to find out...
I tried a picture, but you can't really see anything at the moment. I'll take pictures after they're welded and painted so others can see the pattern.
