so it is quite likely that the diff is an open 8"

I'd definately be starting here. Is it auto or manual?

What do you want the car to be when it grows up?

Post some pics if you can

You went from a sixer? How many lug bolts on your wheels? If it's 4, spend the money on a V8 suspension and 8" rear end with your choice of gears (I like my 3.80's, but they may be too short for some people) and traction device (Detroit Locker).

With just a sixer suspension, you're driving a deathtrap.

Nice color.

What do you call fast?

sub 10 second passes or beating the lap record in class at your local race track?

Remember it a vert! It can be made to go quick in a straight line, but fast to me implies the above. And to achieve the above, you'll need a bucket load of cash and will always be limited by lack of rigidity in the body because you have no roof.

If you want your local rice fried at the traffic lights, then start with the rear end - work out what it currently is and then look to no less than 3.55:1, preferably higher like 4.11, but you will lose highway economy and top speed. that may not be an issue for you. Lots of teh guys here have that sort of ratio and love it for its launch capabilities. It will make a bigger difference the lower the current ratio. It will also make more noticeable improvement than just doing a cam or heads. You'll want posi or some other form of limited slip diff so that both back wheels spin not just one.

then look to a brake upgrade and some suspension improvements...doesnt all have to be super high performance, just better than std mustang!! Bigger brakes are better but require bigger diameter wheels. Bigger diameter wheels cost more (usually) and decent tyres in larger diameter also cost more.

how far you go with this will depend on your budget, but if you treat everything in balance you'll get a far more satisfying car at the end than if you just slam a huge hp engine in the front. If you are determined to have enormous power and money is no object, sell what you just bought and build a 408 stroker with all the fruit!! Better yet, slam dunk a big block in there. You'll tear the rest of the car to pieces in no time, but it will be a blast while it lasts

look forward to hearing what you decide to do
good luck
