Default 66 GT convertible

I'm plan to look at a 66 GT convertible tomorrow. Is there a way to know if the "GT equipment group" is original Vs added later? The GT option is not identified in the VIN or on the door data plate. Thanks.

Well you can look up the VIN number on the door, and you can see what engine it origianlly came with, that is what I did on my GT. 66, 289 high performance, 4bbl, the GT engine

How about looking for a "buck tag"? I have one on my 69 on the radiator support, behind the right headlight that identifies it as a GT. It should list ALL of the options not on the door tag.(AC..etc..)

there is alot of controversy on this subject as many of the GT equipment group items could be added later. I have a '68, my original assembly line buck tag is still attached to the core support, it is indeed stamped 'GT'. The GT package was available on ANY V8 equipped '65 thru '68 Mustang, although some want to argue that it was only a real GT if you got the biggest motor they offered, Not True. CHeck out the link , it has helpful info on the subject.
