Default C4 Fluid Level Problems.... PLEASE HELP

I just got a brand new rebuilt C4 tramsmission with a brand new torque convertor. I put it in my car myself and got everything back together... but i have some problems getting the fluid level correct. The new transmission is built in reverse pattern and has a deep fluid pan. I got it all put together and filled the fluid a little above the full line and started the car. I let it warm up the shifted into all the gears. The car went into all gears and the tires spinned (the car is jacked up but still level.) So after that i checked the fluid level and it wasnt even reading on the dipstick at all. So i put more fluid in and started the car. I shifted into the gears and the fluid level was reading at the right spot. The only problem is is the gears are no longer catching. My question is, if i havea deep pan do i need to get a different dipstick or is my dipstick reading wrong..... or have i done something wrong checking it.

Thanks
Eric
