Default Power steering pump replacement

Mustang Experts,

I am replacing the power steering pump on my '65. The part I recieved from the parts store looks good, except for the return spout. On the original pump the spout points down, and on the replacement pump it points up. How the heck I am supposed to hook up the return line? Is this normal? Should I lengthen the return line?

There are two differen't power steering pumps to choose from...with AC or without. The pump WITHOUT AC points up . The pump WITH AC (you guessed it) points down.It appears you might have gotten the wrong pump if your 65 has AC.

Default RE: Power steering pump replacement

Sorry to disagree with the post above, but the return hose nipples were not different between AC and non-AC cars, just the angle of the filler necks. All Mustang 1965-1966 V8 pumps had downward pointing return hose nipples. That's why the return hoses were the same regardless of AC or non-AC.

If the rest of the pump looks correct, but the return hose nipple points upwards toward the top of the fender apron, instead of downward toward the frame rail, the pump is for a Galaxy. An OEM style return hose will be too short and will kink. Better to add an extension to the hose so this doesn't happen.

It probably won't be just a simple matter of swapping the cans from a Mustang pump to the rebuilt you got. On some Galaxy pumps, the location and clocking of the holes in the back of the can are different from a Mustang.
