Fuel Pump
I want to take off the fuel pump and repaint it. My question is, how much gas should I expect to pour out upon removal and is there anything special I have to do the next time I start the car? I'm taking off the water pump also, are there any suprises I should be prepared for or expect? Thanks all.
Assuming a small block, if you are taling the water pump off, just make sure you keep the bolts in order, they are different sizes. I usually pick a starting bolt and number them clockwize. Also, when re-assembling, put a little silicone gasket sealer on the bolts that pas through the water jackets in the timing cover and into the clock.
When you remove the pump, first loosen the fitting at the pump for the steel line that goes to the carb. Put a bucket underneath. You will only get the gas in the line leaking out. Then remove the rubber line at the pump. There too, you will only get the little bit of gas from the pump to the bend in the fuel line at the apron. Even though it is not a lot, I still wouldn't be smoking while ding it. I would also cap the main line while you have everythiong unhooked.
Good luck
