Default Brighter dash / instrument panel lighting

I have a '67 convertible. Has anyone ever tried removing the blue diffusers that cover the seven or so 1895-light bulbs which illuminate the instrument panel? The way it is, it's so dim you can barely see the gauges. I know there are "glow-in-the-dark" clusters you can get, but I like to keep things as original as possible. I just wasn't sure if the blue diffusers serve some purpose such as keeping the bulbs from melting something, or keeping heat from interfering with the guages. If they are there just to tint the light, then I might remove them and see if it brightens things up a bit. thanks. (see below for picture of the diffuser)

I have a 71, and i did this. I took them off, it did light it up, but added a yellowish tint to it. rather than the greenish blue. I LIKE IT.. but wish theyre were white bulbs to put in place so it wasnt a yellowish tint -Jon

You can replace the bulbs with an LED, that should make it a bit brighter.
Ebay Item Number 160067168669

I recently ordered them, I will let you know if it makes and impact.
