Default 289 4V Question

Can any of you guys explain how the 289 4V worked off of 1 camshaft. Todays cars with 4 valves per cylinder use two cams. Can you guys explain how one camshaft could open all of those valves?

The4v Stands for 4 ventri, which basicly says its a 4 barrel carb. Its still a 2 valve per cyl heads, the 4v just stands for something completly different. I was confused about this a few weeks ago tuill colorado explained it to me! -Jon

Well sonny, back when I was young, we only had money for one cam. We'd just time it right and have it open the needed vale pending what stroke it was on. All you young whipper snappers are so spoiled on your new fancy hot rods and all your 4 cams!

On a serious note - it's the same as it always has been for a one cam, push rod motor. The lobe of the cam opens and closes the valves in time, pending what stroke.

Simple 4 stroke operation.

EDIT* d'oh - misread the question. See, old age gets you in teh worst spot

Go to the Pushrod section.

Yep, still 2v heads. I sure wish they had 4 valve heads. that would be awesome.

There were kits to convert the 5.0L to OHC and another to convert it to 4-valve per cylinder. They had some funky looking rocker arms as the 4-valver still used the same cam.

As you would expect, these kits were a bit more expensive than most engines, let alone heads. I'm thinking somewhere around 5-6k.

What does the ventri mean then?

What makes the 289 4V better than the regular 289?

If you look down into a carburetor, you will see either 1, 2 or 4 holes that go into the intake. Those holes are called venturis. So a 2v carb has two holes, and a 4v carb has four holes. The difference being that the 4v carb has an added link in the acclerator that opens what are called secondaries to allow more fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber so you get more detonation causing more power from the engine. The C code Mustangs had a 2v carburetor, and the A and K code engines had the 4v carburetor. Actually, Venturi was a real dude.

carburetor air inlet:a restricted air inlet in a carburetor that produces a drop in pressure, causing fuel vapor to be drawn out of the carburetor bowl

[Late 19th century. After Giovanni Battista Venturi (1746-1822), Italian physicist]

thanks for the info, i appreciate it.

While we are on the topic of the 289 4V, what are some good ways to add power to this motor (1964.5), keeping in mind that i want it to be as original as possible? Are this easy ways to bolt on a couple things to make this motor a beast?
