Default Sirius Power

I want to hook up my Sirius radio to a switched line instead of using my cigar lighter and I don't want to go spend another 20 or 30 dollars on a kit. Can I just cut off the plug, add an inline fuse and hook the wire into a switched line? If so what do I do with the other wire? Is it one to the juice and the other to a ground? How do I tell which is which?

I don't want to fry my new reciever the same day I got it, so thanks for any help offered. [sm=smiley23.gif]

I am assuming that the Sirius reviever has a cigar lighter attachment? If this is the case, before you cut it unscrew it. There should be a fuse inside. The wire that goes to the fuse is the positive, the on that goes to outer case is the negative.
Then ground one side and switch the other.

You got the concept right by cutting the plug, adding the fuse inline, and attaching to a power source. However, I know the XM radio in my son's stang runs off a lower voltage than the 12v from a switch power wire in the stang. We just bought a cig lighter adapter and plugged theXMcigpower plug into that. I think there is a resistor of sorts in the cig lighter plug which reduces the power going to the receiver to keep it from frying. You might check it out before running 12v straight to the Sirius input...just a heads up...good luck..enjoy!!

The Cigar/Cigarette lighter plug is a constant 12V source. No resistor to lower the voltage. If your Sirius radio has a light in it or a clock or any other device that needs constant voltage, then the back of the cigar lighter is a good point to hook up the yellow wire. But if you don't have that, and only have a red and black wire, then the cigar lighter wire is your 12V positive and the black one is the ground. If you look at the backside of your ignition switch, you will see a green/black wire. That is your switched 12V supply. The ground wire can go anywhere to ground.

Don't take this wrong but read the directions. I'll bet it tells you everything.
