I'm not sure I understand your first question. Vacuum advance advances the timing-by rotating the distributor slightly)based on the engine load. There is also centrifugal advance which advances the timing based on engine speed. Asthe enginespeed or the load that you are putting on the engine increases, you need to rotate the distributor a little so that the spark plugs still fire at the correct time. You can find a good explanation of how an engine's ignition system works including pictures at "How Stuff Works."

Thanks. I want to replace the Distributor Vaccum Advance on my distributor and vacuum hosesbut I can choose either single or dual set up. I had a single point distributor (now changed to Pertronix) so I'm thinking I need the single vaccum advace set up. Hope that helps.

doesnt matter if you have single points, dual points, or electronic ignition - a dizzy that has a vaccum advance will only have one vaccum advance.

+1 on my77stang's comments. If your vacuum advance is just old and nasty looking and is still working fine you can buy a chrome cover that goes over top of the old one for only $4 from YearOne.

heck, just replace it with a new piece, you can get an adjustable one for pretty cheap.

something along the lines of this:

Your single point distributor could have been equipped with either the single connection vacuum advance unit or the double connection advance/retard unit. What is on it now? If you currently have a dual unit and don't care about originality you can eliminate the retard connection and replacethedual with a single.
