Default Gear recommendation w/ this Cam

This is the Cam I want to buy:

http://www.compperformancegroupstore...ry_Code=31-CAM

Note the gear recommendation on the description. I'm not sure what I have for gears, they may be 2.72s or something in my stock 67 C code with stock C4 auto. What is the downside of running this cam with possibly not the recommended gears? How big of a deal is it for street use?

the reason bigger cams want lower gears is because the motor will have no oomph on the bottom (bigger the cam, higher the operating range is a good rule). you'll need lower gears or it will be a pig off the line, which defeats the purpose of spending money on go-fast parts.

that being said, i dont see a cam on the link you sent so i have no idea how big the cam you are looking at actually is.

Thanks for the info. The Cam is a Comp Xtreme Energy 262H Flat Tappet Hydraulic Camshaft. Some specs are:

Intake Exhaust
Valve Adjustment: 0 0
Gross Valve Lift .493 .5
Duration At 0.006 Tappet Lift 262 270
Duration at .05 218 224

Let me know if you need more info. I'd like to know if this Cam will be any good for me or if I will NEED to change my gears...thanks!!!!

i wouldnt go any higher then 3.55's. That cam produces more power down low, so you'll fall flat on your face with a lower gear like 4.10's.

I think I have 2.79's and the Comp Cam site suggests 3.23s to 4.10s. Doesn't that suggest my 2.72s will suck?

Right off the Comp description page for this cam:

DESCRIPTION:
HYDRAULIC: Excellent response, good mid-range, stock converter, 3.23-4.10 gear.

3.73's would be the lowest i would go for a non-overdrive vehicle if your wanting to drive it regularly. but 3.55's would be an excellent choice as well, especially since your stock gearing is prolly in the high 2.xx's

for me, i have 3.43's stock, so im lookin at the 3.73's (actually i think its 3.80 for the rears used in my mustang II) - i dont think its worth the money to only go from 3.43 to 3.55 ya know?
