OK now I'm with you. How do you identify these carbs. My 73cj has only the number "12" on the top in fron of the airhorn.

I seen one about three years ago at a MCA grand national. Priced at 1500, at this time I thought it was high, I have spent many nights thinking of how Igoofed up by not buying it. The Rochester I have is excellent condition so maybe a trade will be in order.Just one number off. The J code I have is not running at this time. The 429CJ has been rebuilt and is still on the stand. I will rebuild the tranny next. I have been buying parts for about 4 years now and am fairly close to starting the restoration. The 65 Fastbackwill haveto be next. Its my wifes car and I have my orders. I will try to find the correct numbered carb.

Lotsa bad info on here since I last read it.

No Mustang has ever had a factory horsepower rating at the rear wheels. Do many variables.

In '72, Ford dropped the compression and changed the cam spec's to comply with emissions.

Net horsepower does not have the AC running. Your AC will turn off at full throttle, anyway. It will have the AC hooked up, but the clutch won't be engaged...just like it'd be on the street.

Horsepower ratings also became more standardized. No more 335hp @ 3700 rpm with a 6k rpm engine. How an engine is rated has changed through the years. One good example is the 5.0L from the early 90's. The specs never changed, but it lost 20hp just because of how the ratings were read. The ratings are changing again, making it that much harder to compare engines from different eras.

good question, i'd like to know what some of these old motors REALLY made - because alot of em were underrated for insurance purposes in the late 60's too.

your carb,,if its a autolite..should say strait forward on the front of it..or side.autolite.4300..4300d..4100..and on the air horn should be the dz number....ill have to pull it out of the box barried in the shop to double check...i stuck it away cause i put a elderbrock carb and aluminum main on it this year..and stuck all the original stuff away....the 4300d is the rare bird of the autolites...was only put on the highest of preformance cars of the year..boss..cj...ho cleveland..

you should be able to tell just cause its a spreadbore...the reason i had to get a new manifold..was cause the elderbrock preformer would bolt up..but i could see half of my back secondairy holes still..lol..the old 4300d was so much wider than any ford carb i seen..so wide even a preformer wouldnt cover the orignal manifold holes.....so i had to pull off my orignal speadbore manifold...my orignal manifold will only work with the orignal carb...unless i was puddy..weld...to fill in the air holes..and it still wouldnt work right..lol..ill dig that carb out somtime this weekend when i get time off and tell you all were the numbers are..i notice alot of mustang restorers are keeping this bit of info on the down low...who knows how high these carbs mite run some day....i think alot of these guys are grabbin them all so there is none left and we have to pay there outragous prices..lol
