AOD Swap needs question
I am looking to do a swap in my 71 302 from a C4 to an AOD. I have done alot of research and it looks like a pretty straight forward swap. I am curious if I need any more parts beside the Crossmember, Shift linkage, Neutral safty switch, and a 164 tooth flywheel? I also believe you need to shorten the driveshaft. Does anybody have any input that has done this swap before?
I was under the impression that you would not need a neutral safety switch because the switch is located in the shift linkage in the console area. I was again under the belief that the switch that mounts in the AOD (89-93) was just plugged to prevent leakage. Am I incorrect in this perception?
The safey switch and backup light switchis in the trans. There is a cable available for 67/68 that plugs in direct, don't know about other years. Mine still needs it but works fine without (nothing pluged in). $650 with the converter sounds cheep considering a converter is alone that price. Get a guarante.
OK...the Neutral switch is in the gear selector on the 70 auto with FMX. I have an AOD that I bought a few winters ago and I was informed that since my neutral switch is involved in the gear selector in the console I did not have to do anything with the NS harness that is in the AOD. I could either cut off the wires close to the tranny or install a plug. Thsi kind of thing is exactly why the tranny still is NOT in the car. LOL
On the AOD it's a plug. Because you already have everything in the car don't worry about the trans, it works with out anything pluged in.
Note: we are talking about an AOD Not an AODE. AODE is electronic and is different, it does need a control unit...I can't tell you how to check, maybe someone else can..

Yes it is an AOD. After 93 is when they made the AODE. Every winter I tell myself this is the year I do the tranny swap, and then I put it off because I'm justnot sure if I have complete understanding of the entire job. It used to be the TV adjustment was the part that had me concerned. Oh well maybe one day.
Don't let the adjustment concern you. It's not that hard to do. When your ready I'll send you some info and try to help...After you put it in you wonder why you waited so long..
Here is a link that might help. I've been reading up on this swap also.
