Default Balance issues?

So, on my last drive in the 66' I noticed a vibration. It was at or around 2-2500 rpms. I did a few road tests and couldn't really pin-point the problem. So, today I had a few hours to really dig into it and I did a few more road tests.

Driving, putting it in nuetral, coasting, down shifting, manualy shifting, etc. Not until I got home was I able to rule out anything behind the tranny. Once back in the garage, I sat in the drivers seat and brought the motor up in rpm's to and past the 2500 mark. Sure enough, right around 2500 it starts the vibration. Now that I know it's there, I notice it at all rpms now. It's just worse at 2500.

Keep in mind that I've had the tranny gone through recently. ( infact, it's been open several times in the last year ). Motor shows no sign of anything lose externaly. The only thing I can come up with off the top of my head is flex plate - torque converter. If it ends up being this, I'll probably be a little pissy. I've paid good money recently to have the trans done.

Am I missing anything? I've checked the balancer, checked all hardware, etc. It's a rotating vibration, like something is out of balance. Not a metal vibration, like a mount busted and the cross member is vibrating against the body, etc.

I'll crawl up underneath it this weekend. I'm really not ready to deal with another trans issue.

Check the tranny and motor mounts. The tranny mount let loose on my Jeep once and it wasn't pretty. One other thing that caused me a mysterious vibration on my Jeep was the onboard belt-driven air compressor. I couldn't locate the vibration until I had somebody else rev up the engine and I felt around up front. Once I beefed up the mount it was fixed. In your case, feel around on the alternator, ac compressor, ps pump, etc. to make sure that one of them isn't the problem.

Good luck!

It's time for a belt change anyway, that'll give me time to touch everything rotating up front this weekend. It's enough of a vibration that I'm not comfortable driving it until I can put my hand on the problem. If it's tranny and I do drive it, no tellin what else can let loose.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll update as soon as I can this weekend.

Alright - I woke up in the middle of the night from a dream I had and wrote it down on paper. I went back to bed and now awake again with a cup of coffee down me.

My dream was that the flex plate and torque converter came apart in a million pieces, tearing through the bell housing and totaly ripping through the new floor pans and carpet. When I got everything apart, there was a piece of the TC and FP still bolted on the back of the motor and each piece had a weight on it. They were not 180* from each other - they were like right next to each other.

Am I right in that those need to be opposite each other? Like to balance the whole thing out? I know that my dream was a little exagerated, but it did point to the weights.

Any thoughts?

Seems to me that the torque convertor shouldn't have a weight on it (and if it does it should only be to balance the TC itself)Your flexplate should have a weight appropriate for your engine and match the balancer on the crank pulley.

wow i thought you were gonna say something about waking up and writing down plans for a flux capacitor or somethin LOL

anyways, iamdiffrnt is right, any weights on the TC are just to balance itself. doesnt matter which way it bolts to the flexplate. BUT, seeing as how you had a vision, i'd check and see if maybe a nut or bolt fell off down there. hell maybe your FP is cracked even
