windshield and back light replacement help
Hey guys. I did my best to search the FAQ before asking this question. I think I understand but I want to double check and maybe get a few more tips. When using the rope trick, do you put the glass in the rubber then lay the glass up against the car with the rope in the ouside rubber channel? Do I seal the rubber after it is installed? I had a bunch of sticky sealant around the window opening when the winshield was removed. It was tar like and very sticky. What are the best sealants and applications? I have to buy new window trim now. I found that one of my side trim pieces is dented beyond repair. Plus I don't want to put a crappy piece of trim on the new paint job. I also have a new bag of clips for the trim. Thanks in advance!

This article is about a Chrysler Imperial windshield replacement using the rope trick, etc. but will be the same as your Mustang because they both use a rubber seal.

You have the right idea. The rope ends should be in the bottom middle as I recall. Doyourself a favor and get some spray sylicone, it will help the gasket slide over the pinchweld and is extremely helpful for the corners, as they are easy to tear if not careful. Use it in generous amounts spraying it on outside edge of the gasket (or the part of the gasket that you will see on the inside after its installed). Try to keep it out of the inside of the gasket.
That sticky stuff is what we use to call dum-dum, and its probably original (if its greyish in color). We used urethane windshield sealant. Its tricky to get them sealed good and not make a mess, so be carefull. I have found the best clean up method for urethane is using citrus based cleaners. I have a tub of despensible citrus towls. They dont hurt the paint. I don't remember the name and im too lazy to run out to the garage at the moment.
Anyway, after you have the rope in, take the urethane in a caulking gun and put a bead just above the rope on the inner lip of the gasket (the part that will lay against the outside edge of the pinchweld). Trick is settingthe windshieldinto the hole in the right position the first time. You will want at least one other person holding the glass in position from the outside; two is better. Their job is to keep constant pressure against the glass while you pull the rope.Start with the left bottom corner, then the right. Then the top left corner, then the right. Should end somewhere on top. Might need to slap the outside of the glass to get it to fall into place. Not hard like you might want to bi*** slap your boss, but nice and soft like its back sideof your lady friend. More often then not, some "slapping" is required to get the windshield seated correctly.
Once you get it in, spray the excessive urethane sealer (yes there will be some) with water to neutralize its stickiness making it easier to remove.
I suggest the warmest envirnment you can manage to do the job as the gasket will be more friendly if warm. -Good luck

Thanks guys. Great info Smothers. I will probably do the glass tomorrow because my car is still on Elmendorf AFB. I've been taking advantage of the shop there. I will have to order my reverse lights and chrome reverse light bezels as my old ones look bad.
Can I get the urethane caulking at the parts store? Does Home Depot carry it?
