Default Engine Paint and Gaskets

Hey guys,
So, I pulled my radiator to have the transmission cooler nipple fixed and the guy told me that once he fixed it there was a leak in the core towards the top of the radiator.. I dont know if I trust the guy or not, the place seemed kind of "sheisty".. and wants $30 for the fix of the nipple..So I think I will just abandon the old radiatorinstead of paying him and go toKragen and pick up a new $199 (plus %10 off military discount) radiator with a lifetime warantee..( any suggestions?)

Anyway, since the coolant was drained I pulled the water pump (it was ugly) and painted it engine enamel aluminum, the pully is ford blue, and the fan is also aluminum (painted).. looks good... But now since Ive got the painting itch, i want to do the rest of the engine, or at least the valve covers and whatever else I can get at without killing myself or pulling the motor.. so do i have to replace valve cover gaskets every time I pull the covers off? How about the intake is it ok to paint? And does any one else have that stupid spring thing in their lower radiator hose? That thing was rusted as hell so I threw it away..

So let me know any secrets about painting under the hood.. ok.

On the vavle cover gaskests....It all depends on how bad or good that they look..... If the are falling apart....I would replace...

ive seen the intakes painted in the past.....However I can't tell you if its good nor bad...

Not sure what year your car is, but if the pulley is Ford Blue, then it is 66 and up. The color is actually called Corporate blue. Yes, replace the valve covergaskets when you take them off to paint them. Use rubber gaskets. On the radiator........either get a 4 core rad with the tranny line nipples on it, or get an aluminum one. My 4 core works just fine, but the old 2 core was crap. Also, if you go to the FAQ section, you can find an article about detailing your engine bay. Just scroll down to section VII.

+1

would a normal auto parts store carry a 3 core for a reasonable price? aren't 4 core aluminum units expensive as all hell?

btw, that rusty spring in your lower hose is to keep it from being able to collapse. i dont know if it would really collapse or not, but i do know manufacturers are cheap and wouldnt produce and give you something unless it served a good purpose [8D]

Absolutely, that rusty spring keeps your lower hose from collapsing under pressure at high speeds, so if yours is rusted out, replace it with on with a new spring in it.
I have found that the price between the 3 and 4 core copper rads is minimal.
The 3 rows have a little wider fin design and the 4 rows are closer together, so either one would be fine in most cases. I just needed a lot of water going slowly over the fins out in west Texas during the summer with the air con on, so that is why I opted for the 4 row. I didn't mean to say get a 4 row aluminum rad. The two row aluminum rad will suffice.
