Default Which Tranny?

Hi All.
First new post in the Classic 'Stangs section, so forgive me for asking the typical newbie questions [:'(]

I just got a '68 Coupe w/289 and a C4 that needs major resoration and am in the plannig stages (Budgeting, a wife's requirement). Not a full resto, but just a car that I'll have fun driving (ok, maybe some track days). First I know that the floor pans need to be replaced pretty bad. But, strangely enough, I find myself not able to take my mind off of the power train. MORE Horse, MORE Torque, Muhaha!
Anyway, I was looking at gettng a 347 from Mustang Performance or fordCobraengine.com. ~400 horse and 400 torque. I also wanted a Manual Tranny because I've always had more fun on those. The thing is that I see that I see that the T5 from Ford Performce is only rated up to 330 ft/lbs. Are there any other manual Trannys that I can use (beside the T6, $$$) that I can use which won't cost me an arm and a leg in conversion parts?
Also, what if I cryo a T5, will that be able to handle it?

Good question, on my mind also. The next step up are Tremecs, 3550 and TKOs, but they cost more. Maybe the fast 5.0 guys know if a T5 can be upped to 400/400...

The old top loader with a 9 inch rear can handle anything you can give it. The universal joints will twist off before that old tranny will give up. BTW, Ford has had to upgrade their Tremec due to flaws and weaknesses. I just had a $1000 upgrade done on my o3 mach for free. So, if you have one of these trannys on your vintage, you might want to consider getting it upgraded. Bottom line, the tremecs are basically a POS as they came out from the factory.

Well, the T5 certainly looks like what I want. I just ope that I don't have to do lots of mods to get it in there. Thanks all for your help.

t-5s take a few bucks to get strong id spend the money and buy a tremic tko or something like that, the best manual trans ever made is the 4 speed toploader id consider that inless you really want a 5 speed

No, I don't have my heart set on a 5-speed. Just a good manual that will run smooth on the streets. (even thought the steets areound here are absolute crap)
Do you know of any good places where i can check out the toploader? many places I've seen will only sell the rebuild kits.

I agree with soaring. A good old 4 speed toploader and 9 inch rear are nearly indestructible(and you won't have to buy adapter parts to make it fit).
