I have seen on a 62 Fairlane that the metal that supports the control-arm to the frame is held by Small welds behind them on the sheet metal. I also have read that broken welds will haunt you on older mustangs. This might be something to look for.

Yeah, I was thinking that the welds are broken or the metal is cracked.

I bought most of my new suspension parts from a local guy who also restores classic Mustangs. When he sold me the upper control arms, that is exactly what he said to me. "When you have the upper arms off make sure there are no cracks in the shock towers before you put the new arms on." He said this was common and recommended that I put some large washers on the engine bay side of the shock towers to spread out the load over a larger area, even if I didn't see any evidence of cracking/metal fatigue.

In the off chance this may be the case, was your mustang originally a 6 cylinder car?

I have a 302 in a mustang that originally a 6 cylinder car. When I first got it I had really sloppy steering so I took it into a shop. The guy saw the 8 cylinder under the hood and set it up using the V8 specs.

The result was a similar "A" stance from my front end. When I told him it was originally a 6, he set it up for those specs and it rides perfectly. I have no idea what the difference is, though.

[*Insert comments regarding 6 to 8 cylinder suspension here!*]

the V8 is heavier

with mine the car was just getting too low in the front. but the stance (camber) was ok.
I replaced springs and shocks, so now it's fine (at least fine for the eye).

Lol, It's definately a original V8 car. Im thinking it's cracks. Im going to try the large washers. How did you do it though? They cant sit flush because the of the brace sticking up?

To tell you the truth, I didn't do it.[&:] Also, his recommendation was just a precaution to take if the shock towers looked okay to lessen the chance of future problems. It's not a fix if the problem is already there.

You might consider taking the car to a collision center and having them put it on a frame machine. They will be able to "load" and "unload" the suspension while observing to see if anything moves. If there is somthing loose, cracked, or broken, you should be able to find it using this method.

yeah, I might do this. I just really dont trust any shops anymore. I have found an alignment tool at JEgs for like $180. That why i can align the car myself, so i know the alignment's right, and if it's still floating, i'll consider finding a reputable shop.

Just curious, I was wondering how much you wanted to sell it for?
