My car is still screwed up with alignment. My wheels keep getting out like an A. No matter what i do, they wont stay in correct alignment. I've spent too much money into this car. I replaced upper and lower control arms, new strut rod bushings, new engine brace, and monte carlo bar. Im totally stumped to the problem. Anybody want to buy a 66 mustang with 289 auto?

Yeah. It's the same one with the missing engine crossmember. I finally got that thing on there now though, so i dont think thats the problem. Does the idler arm and tie rods really have much to do with the vertical alignment of the car? I know they have to do with the...... um... im trying to think how to say it, but i think you know what im getting at. lol.

Idk what i want to sell it for. I got to pick up my 65 im looking at buying first, then i'll decide a price.

ok, so it keeps going into negative camber where the wheels are in at the top and out at the bottom on the vertical axis so its srubbing the inside edge of the tyre?

the stuff i was talking about would affect the toe in/out where the wheels eithersplay outor go cross eyed looking at them from the front. And the strut rods would affect the caster or how the wheels are positioned forward or back relative to the fender.

might be a dumb question, but is your wheel alignment guy old-school? Most of the new generation dont understand the setups properly. I would be looking at ball joints first, but you've done that! Second would be the shims at the top. Mine had been setup without regard to that and also had a problem with the top ball joints. Combined effect was to scrub the insides and it did it very quickly (< 1500miles).

Charlie, have you had your car looked at by an old school Mustang alignment shop? It sounds like you are getting it close, then something slips. Not sure what it might be, but it has to be attended to by an old guy who understands the alignment procedures for a 65 Mustang. At any rate, we are so used to your light blue stang that I'm not sure we could get used to another one, and another one would cost you more to fix up to the standards yours is, that it would be simpler and less expensive to get the front end on your right. There just has to be a front end alignment shop somewhere near you who can put it back to specs.

whats the rest of the car like?
it'd be a pity to get rid of it over something that should be readily fixable. And at least you already know what is right and wrong with the rest of the package.
Uncovering the p/o's lies on a "new" project can be unpleasant, just ask me

Well, I cant seem to find anybody that can work on these old front ends. Thats what makes me mad the most. I've spent $200 in different alignment shops, who supposedly aligned it, but every time i look at the shims, they're in the same place as before. I do know the car has been wrecked pretty badly in the front drivers side. But Aussie, your right. Thats how my wheels are doing, which is why i dont understand. I've covered all the problems i can thing of.

Yep...nothing gives me the ***** more than spending good money after bad chasing the same problem.
From what you have said, shims is looking more and more like the culprit. However you also need someone who knows what they are looking at to double check the ball joints to make sure you didnt get a dud new one (not unusual with all the chinese remanufactured parts). Also that there is no movement in the upper arms where they bolt into the shock tower.

Have you tried a local mustang club or someone who races vintage stangs for contacts? The other option is maybe a truck wheel alignment shop because heaps of trucks have shim setups. The smallest ad in the yellow pages or the oldest dirtiest looking shop??? I never go into the big branded franchises because they turnover too many staff and I dont want some apprentice with attitude working on the car. (Note - issue with attitude not age!)

I live in a district of less than 10,000 people and there are 4 tyre/ wheel alignment shops here. Only one of them has a clue how to work on this car. Fortunately for me, he isa classic enthusiast with a racing background. He does my stang and my race car and I pay him in beer!!
